Free browser space strategy game — no download
Galactica - The roots is a free, browser-based, tick-based space strategy game: you start with one planet, produce resources, research technology, build fleets and fight for the galaxy in alliances. Eight playable species, in English and Hungarian, nothing to install — on desktop and on your phone.
What the game is, in a few sentences
A multiplayer space strategy game that runs in your browser. Every player starts with one planet in a shared galaxy and builds an empire from there: bringing asteroids ("roids") into production, putting up buildings, researching technology, producing ships, scouting with probes and sending fleets to attack or defend.
The game is inspired by the Hungarian browser strategy game Galactica of the early 2000s — the code has been rebuilt from scratch, with eight species and a modern, phone-friendly interface.
What a game looks like
- ECONOMY: three resources — metal, crystal and narion. Narion is the fuel of your fleets: without it no ship leaves the hangar.
- TECHNOLOGY: more than a hundred researches and buildings, with a different tree per species. One build and one research run at a time, so what you queue matters.
- SHIPS AND DEFENCE: ship classes, defence units and satellites; each unit type fires at different targets.
- SCOUTING: probes show you what you are up against before you attack — attacking blind is the most expensive mistake.
- ALLIANCES: a shared treasury, shared upgrades and elected leadership. The alliance is the social side of the game.
- After a battle you get a detailed report on what happened and why.
Tick-based: no 3am shifts
The world advances at a fixed interval: one tick is 60 minutes, and production, building, manufacturing and fleet arrivals all happen at the tick. You keep growing while you are away.
That is why the winner is not whoever is at the screen at 3am. A few logins during the day are enough, as long as your queues do not sit empty. Details: Ticks, protection and inactivity.
Eight species, with real differences
The eight species are not just a different colour. Each gets its own tech tree and ship line, and five of them have a unique combat mechanic: the Korrath steal enemy ships and make them fight on their side, the Umbrix heal with life-steal damage, the Cindrax block instead of killing, Zyvarn ships hit back with self-destruct damage, and the Ordris order field weakens the other side's combat values.
We measure species balance by simulating pairwise battles instead of guessing. The species choice is made once and is permanent — look at all eight before you decide.
The first days
You spend the first 72 ticks (3 days) in the Collector galaxy, where you cannot be attacked — use that time on your economy. After it, 24 more ticks of protection follow.
If you cannot log in, Settings has a vacation mode and a "do not disturb" protection window. The beginner's guide walks you through the first roughly 100 ticks, click by click.
On phone and desktop, in two languages
The game runs in the browser; there is nothing to download. On a phone you can also install it as an app (PWA) from your home screen — but it is not a native app.
The interface is in English and Hungarian, and both languages live in the same world, not on separate servers.
Log in with a password or with a Google or Discord account, with two-factor (TOTP) authentication.
Is it really free?
Yes: it is free to play, signing up does not need a bank card, and there is no paid service this season. In-game extras are bought with Credit, which you earn by playing — the beginner missions award some, for example.
Who it is for, and who it is not
It is for you if you like long-term planning, balancing economy against army, and a game that fits around your calendar.
It is not the best fit if you want real-time action or quick matches of a few minutes: this is a slow, number-crunching strategy game.
You start with one planet — the galaxy is up to you
Signing up is free, and you pick your species on your first login. The beginner missions take you by the hand through the first steps.
